Study Finds AI Exposure Doesn't Mean Job Loss: Highly Exposed Workers Are Faring Better

The Economic Innovation Group’s August 2025 report examines whether AI is causing widespread job loss. Using multiple labor‑market analyses and five measures of AI exposure, the study found no evidence of a looming “job apocalypse”. In fact, between 2022 and early 2025 the unemployment rate rose faster for the least AI‑exposed workers than for the most exposed.

Highly AI‑exposed occupations include genetic counselors and financial examiners, whose tasks involve standardized processing of information. These workers tend to be better paid, more educated and less likely to be unemployed than their less exposed counterparts. The analysis also shows that women and men are fairly evenly represented among the most exposed occupations, while the least exposed quintile skews heavily male.

The study explored other measures such as labor‑force exit and occupational switching and again found minimal impact from AI. Highly exposed workers are not exiting the workforce at higher rates, nor are they switching to lower‑exposure occupations more than in the past. The findings suggest that, so far, AI adoption is not displacing workers en masse but may be augmenting certain roles.
